[FOOD ADDICTIVES] Diet Coke’s Top Secret

The Coca-Cola Company introduced Diet Coke to the public in 1982. It became a very famous drink for people who wants to cut their calories. You may also love drinking a diet coke instead of a regular coke because of zero calories. If you see the Nutrition Facts of the Diet Coke below, it contains only 40mg of sodium in one can. Other nutritional amounts are zero.

Have you wondered why diet coke contains zero calories?

Here is why.

The biggest difference between a regular coke and a diet coke is that diet coke contains aspartame instead of high fructose corn syrup.

What is Aspartame?

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener and about 200 times sweeter than regular sugar. In fact, aspartame does not have zero calories but much less of it is needed to achieve the desired sweetness.

Chemical Form of Aspartame

Aspartame can be also used as an ingredient in other beverages, dairy products, nutrition bars, desserts, chewing gum, sauces, ice cream, etc.

You may see a pack of ‘EQUAL’ in a coffee shop. The main ingredient of the Equal is aspartame.

Who made it?

Aspartame was discovered by James M. Schlatter in 1965.

While he was researching drugs with chemicals, he accidentally lick off his finger with the chemical. It was against work safety regulations, but he discovered the new world.

Is it safe to eat?

Yes, it is. FDA scientists have reviewed scientific data regarding the safety of its food and concluded that it is safe.

Since it doesn’t raise blood glucose levels, people with diabetes can still consume aspartame. However, FDA said the acceptable daily intake of aspartame for humans is 50mg/kg body weight in the United States for both adults and children. If a human consumes too much aspartame, it can cause breathlessness, elevated blood pressure, and skipped or racing heartbeat. Just don’t consume it too much!

However, since it is almost zero calories, good for losing weight?

According to several studies, aspartame may lead to gaining weight. A study, JAMA Network Open published in 2021, gave some clues why. The study’s author said that after people consumed the drink with aspartame, they ate more food.

However, other scientists claimed people ate more food after they consumed drinks with regular sugar as well. Therefore, it is difficult to clearly determine aspartame influences on appetite and hunger ratings.

As a result, I recommend you not eat too much sugar or other artificial sweeteners. Please try to cut sugar daily.
