Barcelona have finally signed Jules Kounde from Sevilla. Chelsea strongly wanted him, but it is over now. There were reports that Chelsea was very close to sign him last week, but Barcelona has beaten Chelsea successfully. Barcelona agreed a fee of around $55m with Sevilla.
Why Barcelona wanted to sign Kounde?
Kounde is 23-year-old and French football player. He can play as right-back. Barcelona currently has Ronald Araujo, Gerard Pique, and Eric Garcia as centre-back options. Barca will sign Andreas Christensen from Chelsea for sure this summer. They have only 4 of them and Pique is 35-year-old, too old to play regularly. Eric Garcia is too young to play in the first team. Therefore, they needed more back ups. Kounde would be a great option for that.
Kounde has a very good potential to become a best centre-back. He is pretty fast and ability to jump high, and head defense & score. His greatest point is defending and interceptions. He can also play as defensing midfield and has a good enough passing ability. Barcelona historically line up their defense very high so they need a centre-back to cover their wide back field. Kounde has a great speed and interceptions so he will cover it very well. Comparing with Lenglet, currently on Tottenham Hotspur loan, as a great passing ability, but he is too slow and not good at defensing. He had a trouble with covering the wide back area.
